What is the significance of diversity?

“Culture is defined by each person in relationship to the group or groups with whom he or she identifies. An individual’s cultural identity may be based on heritage as well as individual circumstances and personal choice.” (American Association of Medical Colleges, 1999, 25)

Cultural diversity acknowledges the presence of a variety of backgrounds within society. It is unique to each person.  Working in an environment that recognizes diversity helps to facilitate communication, cooperation and improvements in health.

As this area of practice develops, our interest is in providing practical approaches that can be sustained in practice settings.
