Patient Engagement

What is Patient Engagement?

Patient engagement refers to actions individuals take to obtain the greatest benefit from the health care services available to them (Center for Advancing Health, 2010). This includes their knowledge about their own care and knowledge of care resources.  Patient engagement is highly influenced by their sense of efficacy at being able to care for themselves, as well as their ability to efficiently monitor, maintain and act on their own health needs. Engaged patients experience better health outcomes.

Having a patient more engaged in their own care increases health outcomes in the patient and the professional satisfaction of the health care practitioners.
